Having covered the travel industry for years, I often hear about new places and events from media folks and friends. When my editor at Bethesda magazine asked if I’d be interested in writing their new “Get Away” column (it debuted in March), I was thrilled to have a home to share the best of those discoveries. Each column offers four ideas for a mid-Atlantic escape and includes something for everyone, whether you’re looking for a new hotel or inn to check out, a golf or spa getaway, explorations by bike, kayak or run, or a day trip worthy event.
I’d love to hear your thoughts on your favorite places. Keep the suggestions coming!
The July | August issue includes new ways to stay cool at two Virginia water parks, a 5-night cycle the Chesapeake Bay tour, a topiary garden that offers music under the stars, plus details on Baltimore’s new luxury inn. The inn has the warmth and feel of a friend’s retreat home, albeit a wealthy friend with an elegant mansion complete with comfortable library seating, secluded outdoor terraces, decadently decorated guest rooms, homemade treats, and more. I could have happily written there for days. Additional details here from the column:
Tucked in the historic Mount Vernon neighborhood, The Ivy Hotel, which opened in June, is Baltimore’s newest luxury escape. At this brownstone mansion turned posh hotel, you can play the piano in the music room, read in the library, play billiards in the conservatory, relax in the spa and ride anywhere you’d like in the city (gratis) in the hotel’s antique black London taxi. Each of the 18 rooms and suites has a fireplace, a bathroom with a heated French limestone floor, and some have a patio or balcony overlooking the ivy-walled courtyard. All-inclusive perks include a gourmet breakfast, afternoon tea, evening cocktails, midnight snacks, two complimentary (pay-per-view) movies per day and gratuities. Rates range from $475 to $1,400 per night. For details, visit www.theivybaltimore.com.
